1. to be ashamed to do a thing, with infinitive, (Homer), etc.; rarely with participle, αἴδεσαι μὲν πατέρα προλείπων feel ashamed of deserting him, (Sophocles Tragicus):—;absolute, αἰδεσθείς from a sense of shame , (Iliad by Homer)

2. with accusative pers. to stand in awe of, fear, respect , αἰδεῖο θεούς (Iliad by Homer), etc.; and of things, αἴδεσσαι μέλαθρον respect the house, (Iliad by Homer); ὅρκον αἰδεσθείς (Sophocles Tragicus)
